Selection of Standard Free Energies of Formation for Use
in Soil Chemistry
Introduction
Several authors have compiled thermodynamic data of Sr species. The
most important references include Garrels and Christ (1965), Technical Notes
of the U.S. National Bureau of Standards (NBS), Wagman et al. (1968, 1969, and
1982), Smith and Martell (1976), Parker et al. (1971), Stull et al. (1971),
Naumov et al. (1971), and Karapet'yants and Karapet'yants (1970).
Often large differences are found in the free energy of formation (DG°f)
values of Sr reported by the various compilers. Users of these data are faced
with the frustration of trying to select the best value for their use. In
this report, we have attempted to review the available literature on
thermodynamic, electrochemical, and solubility data of various Sr compounds to
obtain the most reliable values. Attempts have also been made to compare
thermodynamic equilibrium constants of Sr reactions used by different
geochemical models.
