Mixed Finite-Element Methods for Computing
Groundwater Velocities
Abstract
Central to the understanding of problems in water quality and quantity tor effective management of
water resources is the development of accurate numerical models to simulate aspects of hydrology and contaminant
transfer. Several important difficulties arising in modeling of subsurface flow are discussed and promising,
numerical procedures for alleviating these problems are presented. Mixed finite element techniques for accurately
approximating fluid velocities are described, and computational results on a variety of hydrology problems
are presented.
